Maybe thats one of the reasons why the US Department of Defense decided to purchase 650,000 iOS devices today and not Android. That and the fact that iOS when all is said and done is the superior platform.

Thats not such a bad idea.

Apple to release a competitively priced forked Android phone. Rebadged of course so as not to taint their premium branding. The installed bloatware to contain Apple services such as iTunes, Maps, iCloud etc for lockin and revenue stream.

This will enable Apple to be price competitive with Samsung/HTC with the added advantage of causing yet more fragmentation within the Android ecosystem.

Well at least nowhere as far as app and web usage stats are concerned.

Android has done very well selling way way more devices than Apple. But the alarming elephant in the Android room is that no one is using it, except as a dumb phone.

Aside from the very small subset of developers and commentards found on publications like the Reg most Android users would be just as happy with an old Nokia 6230i. Most people don't seem to use their Android devices for much more than phone calls, texting and taking the odd photo. The bloke in the phone shop recommended it at upgrade time, so thats what they got. Nice big screen cept this time the battery doesn't last as long.

Like the old VCR's of the 80's? Always flashing 00:00:00 because people found programming the clock/setting recording times to be too much effort. Same seems to be happening with Android. Apps and web are available but not being used.

On the tablet side, things are even worse. In the US iPad creates roughly 7 times as many page impressions as all other tablets put together.

Your right but not in the way that you hope. The enterprise is buying iOS devices by the boatload. Including major banks, airlines, insurance and healthcare companies.

These organisations are just not going to touch Android. They need to keep their confidential data confidential. Standardising on an OS who's main purpose in life is to profile its user base and feed this information back to Google kind of goes against that requirement. And we haven't even started to talk about the malware issues that afflict the platform.

Apple have been conservative with their iOS UI (as criticised by fandroids) keeping things consistent and familiar which the enterprise likes as proved by the longevity of Windows XP. iOS is now a mature solid OS with a suite of secure native apps that hook nicely into corporate ERP.

Whilst Windows 8 may get a look in,the lack of apps and an unfamiliar UI make for an up hill struggle. I think the tipping point this time is in Apple's favour.

Bitching about Apple with regards to patents, product design and OS specs is fair enough. But using workers rights issues to get at them when you knowingly purchase kit -be it PC, games console or droidphone- that you know is made in the same factories or worse is unprincipled and hypocritical.

If you really gave a fuck about human rights and workers conditions how about a small donation to War On Want or Human Rights Watch and the like.

The scene is probably not that dissimilar to the situation as Samsung HQ after last weeks verdict.

Sure Apple are pissed off with all the counterfeit devices from Samsung and the like. But scared, I don't think so.

For a start no enterprise is going to use Android as its essentially a user profiling tool to feed Google's ad business. Remember, if somethings being given away free -IE. Android- You are not the customer. You are the product being sold.

On top of that, Android's un-curated app store allows all manor of key logging and location tracking horrors to be installed. The risk of confidential data leaks on the platform are just too high.

From a consumer perspective Samsung and Android in general are seen as copycats and imitators who lack in innovation. This is not a good position to be in as SamDroid can only follow Apple, they can never lead and will always be considered passé.

What would scare Apple is if this changed and Samsung/Google started actually innovating and developing there own unique take on the mobile UI instead of aping iOS. Samsung losing the court case last week is probably the best thing that happen to them, they just don't realise this yet.

As usual the conservative managers and sys admins of enterprise IT have not been keeping up with current events. Times are a changing and Microsofts age is starting to show. IT has to recognise this or risk becoming irelevent. If the users want Macs then let them have Macs, they will get them despite what IT dictates so you may as well be on their side.

Seriously though I think the Google driverless tech is the way to go. I believe its already been licensed for road use in Nevada with California to follow if the current road test trials workout.

On another note I wonder how this will impact on the insurance industry once the safety issues have been addressed? Fully autonomous cars with an almost zero accident rate could be here sooner than we think. As an autonomous drone there will be security worries to be reckoned with too.

Ah Mr Stike Vomit, judging from your past comments the words "regular" and "well-adjusted" are not the first to spring to mind when attempting to ascertain your character and that of the more militant members of the Android supporting community.

Getting back on topic, I hope these forthcoming Google branded tablets are innovative quality products. Not just copycat tablets which can only compete with Apple on price as they have nothing better to offer. Because if they don't Microsoft is going to come marching in very quickly and steal the Android show.

I have a theory that many so called Android fans don't really like Android that much, what unites them is a hatred of Apple. I suspect many are secretly bitter Microsoft supporters who are upset by Microsofts lack of progress with phones, mp3 players, tablets and general innovation over the last 6 odd years since the iPhone came out.

All these closet Microsofties in the Android community will soon jump ship if Google fails to deliver an inspiring product and Android stalls in the tablet space. Microsoft will be the main beneficiary attracting Android developers by the boatload with their highly regarded development tools and non Apple-ness. I hope this doesn't transpire as I would prefer to see an Apple vs Google race than another Apple vs Microsoft death match.

I have voluntarily signed up to Google + though mainly because it has a better name and I thought it was about time I got to see what social is all about. in the early 90's they had the decency to place the start menu at the bottom as opposed to the top and use different style icons to maximise or close windows. In other words they tried to make it look and feel different.

Contrast this with Android which is a blatant iOS clone. If it wasn't for Androids clunky, lag ridden UI most layfolk would have great difficulty in telling the two OS's apart.

Android has contributed nothing towards innovation in computing. Other more creative teams at Google should be embarrassed at being associated with what can only be regarded as a parasite OS.
