Google Cloud caused outage by ignoring its usual code quality protections

Oh weird. Who knew QA was important for code development

Google's AI vision clouded by business model hallucinations

Without any way to get the credibility of an AI or AI agent, I can't see how they will be useful. I may be unimaginative, but every time I think of a use for AI at work, I immediately develop concerns about how I'll have to review the work to make sure I can use it that immediately offset any time saved. With a human, I have natural means of establishing they can perform the task reliably. If they're an industry veteran, if they have a college degree, etc, I can determine the degree to which I will need to check their work. How do I do that with an AI?

Page 75, which I hope you read each of the 13 times they've obsequiously updated their ToS since you first read it, which they'll present to you at the most opportune moment while you're in a rush of some kind before allowing you to access the product you've been relying on. Living services are a scourge.

Today...

Yeah maybe, maybe not. And when they change their mind tomorrow or the next day? The trust is already broken and we know that once they have it, they have it forever. Without any laws, the commitment to any such statement is ephemeral.

More technology

A technologists answer to the problems of technology has always been more technology. It's no surprise that these uber rich technofiles are a one note song about AI development. It finally gives them a chance where they can be omnipotent with their money. The ultimate back drop checking power in human history was that at the end of the day, power was the ability to convince PEOPLE to do what was your agenda. If you were awful enough, people would revolt and you'd be reduced to nothing. With AI, they can be as bitterly ugly and awful as they are because it breaks the dynamic wherin power ultimately is in the people. With AI, you program it, make a robot, and people don't matter anymore. You don't need people to agree to anything anymore, you just need money. It's dystopian and Eric Schmidt is looooong gone.

Tired techie 'fixed' a server, blamed Microsoft, and got away with it

OMG, the journalistic acuity. I laughed so hard, lol.

But man they are happy to use enough water to fill lake Powell every year to extend the generous opportunity to you.

Re: Diversifying the income streams

Nice breakdown. You're totally right

Trank1234

That's disappointing. This was basically the only valuable use case I could think of for AI

Lol, count on it. Abuse your data, steal your IP, take your job and force ads on you. If that isn't a giant pickup truck of 'Merica, I didn't know what is

Tesla's Cybertruck may not be so stainless after all

This is such a a great example of technologists hubris. They always think they're going to change everything with their latest gadget. Sometimes they do, but mostly they just inspire possibility and it's the traditional engineers with their long histories and deep consideration that make it eventually viable. Why do you think the paint on your car is so expensive? It's designed to prevent rust for 20+ years. People have been applying coatings to metal to prevent oxidation for literally ever. The freaking knights of the dark ages knew this, but Tesla doesn't? Worse, consumers bought it? I have negative sympathy for it.

Re: Welcome to the Age of Plausible Deniability

Literally nothing will be provable in very short order. With do much of the evidence we rely on to prove anything has happened being completely fakable, there will be reasonable doubt for anything criminal. Eye witness testimony will once again have to be the gold standard for truth; hardly a comfortable prospect. I shutter about what's coming. The potential abuses are rampant, real, and frightening

Re: Open door policy

Nuclear industry has resisted digitization of primary control functions for this reason for years. People walk into a control room and think it's ancient tech, it must work poorly, but couldn't be more wrong. Unfortunately, you can't buy the parts anymore, so there's that to contend with.

Re: IoShite.

And somehow people think internet connected cars and refrigerators are excellent ideas. I will literally cut the communications antenna out of my car if ever I can't get one without it. If it's on the internet, it's exposed, corruptible and stealable by billions of people, most of whom you have no chance of stopping, catching or holding accountable. No sane person would choose that, yet somehow we are.

It's about time

It's about time people started taking this seriously.
