Post Office and Fujitsu execs 'should have known' Horizon IT system was flawed

dippy1

How long????

A second volume – addressing the causes of and establishing accountability for the Horizon scandal – is expected next year.

I understand that there was a lot said in the court but.......

How can it take more than six months to go through what was said in court?

Re: How many of those 9,000 were in QA ?

None......the did away with QA many years ago.

80 20 rule?

We all know the first 80% is the easy bit.......the last 20% is the hard bit and will take more than 80% of the time.

UK's smaller broadband operators face tough road ahead, consolidation possible

I currently get a reliable 70/20 over copper which is adequate for my needs. I'm only 2km from the exchange.

Gigaclear have put a connection point at the end of my drive (made a real mess of the path in the process but that a separate issue).

I have asked Gigaclear how they will make the connection from the end of the drive to the house - they tell me place an order and then they will do a survey.

Next question to them can you provide me a fixed IP - no they say.

Can you provide me a “landline” telephone (over IP is fine) as I currently have? - no.

I need 2 power sockets within reach on the ingress of the fibre to the house - don't have them on that wall.

I get discounted rate now then you stitch me up in 12/18 months?

So why would I want to switch from my current provider?

(zen by the way - good support when its been required).

Maybe some of these newer providers need a reality check on what they are providing versus what potential customers might want or need.

The state of Right to Repair: Progress made, but key barriers remain

dippy1

Right to repair is great BUT

What happens when the cost of the parts (and potentially the labour) costs far more than a new one?

Recently encountered this with Black and Decker Workmate......the cost of the replacement wooden jaws was more than buying a new one.

Yes I did buy the new one but at least I managed to pass the old one onto someone else who was happy to use it as it was.

Miscreants 'mass exploited' Fortinet firewalls, 'highly probable' zero-day used

dippy1

unpatched zero-day?????

What is an "unpatched zero-day"?

If it is a zero-day by definition there is no patch.

If there is a patch there it is no longer a zero-day - its a known vulnerability.

No that's not Microsoft's role.......that for the user to do that.

One third of adults can't delete device data

dippy1

Most don't even realise that the data is on the phone.

As an example recently a non-tech friend was having issues reading pdfs on their phone.

After sorting the pdf reader I showed them how to find the pdfs stored on the phone.

They were shocked to see pdfs going back a couple of years still on there.

They had received them via email, read them and then deleted the email. not appreciating that the pdf have been downloaded and stored on the phone.

How were they to know?

Asda decided on a 'no go' for 'mass rollout' of store IT conversion

Who is running the project?

Clearly they have no idea about retail.

Since when do retail make ANY system changes in December?

I thought most locked down from mid November.

Delta officially launches lawyers at $500M CrowdStrike problem

Re: FTFY

If I understood correctly at the time, the "update" was pushed out from Crowdstike with no intervention or choice from those running the Crowdstrike agent.

There was no means of testing/staging before full production deployment.

So IMHO the culpable ones are Crowdstike.

I think this is the case(and hence the risk) with most security and AntiVirus products these days.
