Windows 10's demise nears, but Linux is forever

Andy_bolt

Satire?

I’m not a full on nerd. I’m moderately capable in windows but I have a reflexive shudder if I have to word on the command line. That it has felt like the command line is where you have to work in Linux to get functionality appears to be fine to those who are in that space already, but it’s a barrier.

I have tried to get Linux going on a home machine multiple times. Multiple variants. I have tried with the sincere desire to leave windows behind but it ends up too painful and hard to get things going. If it was as simple as most of this thread have suggested, it would be more popular than it is. I have worked with engineers (not IT or software people) for twenty years. If I’d found anyone in that tone who was running Linux I’d have used them to assist me but I’ve never seen a Linux person in the wild. In comparison, I have managed to install and operate windows machines whole not asking much of them for almost every flavour of windows since 95.

I expect to be shot down, but this is what I’ve observed. If Linux was straight forward to use, or support was easy, I’d have been on it years ago.

Re: Say no to PyRIT software

Linux may have better security than windows but the user experience in Linux remains that painful that we’re still nowhere near desktop Linux taking off outside the programming community.

I’m not a programmer. I’m relatively able to do things in windows. Every few years I’ll give Linux a go for a week or two but the pain of it isn’t worth the security (at least for me, and based on the uptake of Linux this isn’t isolated)

Re: Hope the Other Inmates Take Good Care of Him

Criminals are sent to prison as punishment, not for punishment. If as a society we want to enforce harsher penalties on criminals then we should enact it, not have people subjected to mob punishment while behind bars. I’m not defending this guy in the least. I’d happily support capital punishment for this kind of vile offending, but as a society we need to be clear about the purpose of prisons.

Unlikely to assist with cochlear

Agree with the premise of assisting in some implants but with cochlear implants and similar hearing implants they’re powered wholly from the external processor and the power demand is such that the batteries only last a few days at best. (I’ve got a cochlear branded hearing implant where the internals are powered by magnetic induction from the external processor)

They also gave the world jazz. That said, their grand empire definitely feels like it’s on the wane.

Re: "regime"

If it was so highly regarded, then why do so many outside the USA look on the current trajectory wondering if we’re in for a rerun of what followed the fall of the Weimar Republic or if we’re just going to see a kleptocracy form?

Amazon makes $500M bet on itty-bitty nuclear reactors to fuel cloud empire

Re: Just what we need, scores of small reactors...

There are many other facilities that could be damaged in a way that could damage adjacent properties. It’s the invisible bogeyman of nuclear that tabs attention. The cities where nuclear bombs were dropped have rebuilt. Many people did suffer from the radiation but it has not left the land permanently unusable.

Apple quietly removed 60 more VPNs from Russian app store, researchers claim

Are these slave drivers you speak of - an I the only one who immediately wondered what type of software driver would be used to control enslaved people. Or if we enslave ourselves with the various fondle slabs and social media without needing special drivers

If a person is somehow nailed to the wall in the manner of hanging a painting, would he be hanged in that instance?

Re: Doing Business

I’m curious why you got a down vote. It’s not like the Russian regime is benign or just oppressing its own people. They are actively bombing a sovereign nation that had entered into agreements with for them to surrender their nuclear arsenal. Good luck ever convincing any country to ever give up nukes from here on in.

Re: Halfway decent rechargable would be nice

Fully agree. Solid improvements in hearing aid batteries would improve quality of life for users far more than incremental improvements in mobile phone battery life.

Re: Only

I vaguely recall the Russia doesn’t mind cyber criminal activities as long as they are focused outside the motherland. It’sa way to generate revenue. Not a noble way, but we’re taking about a nation who has had maybe a decade of liberty in the past free centuries

Irresponsible of the police to walk off

I get that it’s painful when your pay is not what you expect. Getting that fixed without delay and is reasonable. Walking off the job in a role like the police feels like there’s underlying issues that this is the final straw.

Your pacemaker should be running open source software

Re: The CEOs ....

Probably the only area of life with more caution in how things are regulated might be pharmaceutical or aviation. My wife works in this field. After hearing the culture that exists in this space, I had zero problem getting a medical implant from a firm she used to work for. It is a lower risk implant than a coronary one but companies that make these things take their responsibility seriously.

Andy_bolt

First hand experience

It seems odd that the pacemaker implant could only be read by the manufacturer. I could see a point in limiting ability to tweak settings and maybe they locked down any access. That said, read only access to the data should be very low risk. Certainly lower than someone going in and tinkering with something that could kill your if you’re not perfect in your coding.

Regarding software bugs, the bugs may exist as they do in every piece of software but aren’t of a magnitude that it would trigger a recall by the regulator.

Re: Critical Questions

The point of that aphorism isn’t that Linux isn’t possible on a desktop. It is that it is incredibly rare. A quick google put it under 5%. If you count non desktop, Android probably counts as some form of Linux so the percentage rises but that’s not the metric in question
