That was the story with DuMont and Muntz TVs. GE, RCA, Philco and others built quality sets designed to attempt good reception even in fringe areas. Dumont and Muntz concentrated on selling their sets in cities where signals were strong. And yes, they started with aknown working design and clipped components, like you said. Their sets were built to only receive properly in areas with strong signals.
