TrueNAS CORE 13 is the end of the FreeBSD version

Dante Colò

I think the question ir not be bad or good , if there is a real reason to move to Linux or just a personal preference of someone from Ixsystems.

Dante Colò

I guess this should a decision from someone influent from Ixsystems that simply wants Linux instead. What's the real reason for that switch?

FreeBSD 14's RC2 dances to the tune of OpenZFS 2.2

Dante Colò

Btrfs is also a volume manager and cow filesystem that takes exactly ZFS as inspiration, yes zfs is different than journaled filesystems i know , but on Linux if have a goal to xfs and ext4 and need same performance , zfs won't be that one

Re: OpenZFS is working fine on Linux

I don't think OpenZFS is adequate on Linux or FreeBSD as long as still requires a kernel module to emulate Solaris layer , my opinion on Linux the way to go today is Btrfs if you want similar features , ZFS is a memory hog , need to much memory to achieve a performance much worse than traditional fs like ext4 or xfs. It shines today on FreeBSD because you only have UFS2 as alternative, which is also very good and mature filesystem.

My personal opinion is that on Linux ZFS is mostly good on paper , can't match in terms of performance filesystems XFS and ext4 , it's generally much slower , and also Linux also has Btrfs as alternative, which is inspire itself on ZFS , another thing which i don't like about the ZFS is that is not light on resource usage , it needs a lot of memory to achieve reasonable performance , another ZFS on FreeBSD and Linux still depends on Solaris emulation layer over a kernel module to be able to run on both systems. So at the end i don't think zfs is still adequate for Linux or FreeBSD .

C++ zooms past Java in programming popularity contest

Dante Colò

No surprise, java has its particular advantages but still a crappy, slow , insecure and has similar learning curve as c++ and rust, its usage tends to goes down
