Re: Over the years

Try Notepadqq. Basically, the same thing and available natively on many distros, or as a Flatpak. No need for snap nonsense.

Fedora 41: A vast assortment, but there's something for everyone

Fedora here

For me, it's not so much about the Distro anymore. It's all about the desktop environment and apps. As a long-time KDE user, I can use any of a dozen different distros and the look and feel will be identical. Underneath the covers, there are a few differences, of course, such as package manager, update process, installed apps and perhaps some subtle differences in directory structure. I can, and have run Kubuntu, Manjaro KDE, MX KDE, Neon, openSuSE, Debian or Fedora KDE, and you would be hard-pressed to notice any differences visually. I can install all the same apps, I normally use, on any of them, either directly or via flatpaks. Initial setup and config may vary slightly, but ultimately, it's all the same.

Right now, my primary desktop happens to be on Fedora 41 KDE with ext4. I have 3 other systems in the house, for various purposes. 1 is on Manjaro KDE and the other 2 are on Kubuntu. They all look and feel the same. So as I said, it's not about the distro, it's all about the DE.

Linux Desktop

Loooong time Linux user here (25 years). I have tried them all. Mandrake, Redhat/Fedora, SuSe, Slackware, Debian and all it's derivatives, MX, PCOS-Linux, KDE Neon, and many more. The last few years I have been using Manjaro KDE. It suits me perfectly, is super reliable and has the best hardware detection in the business. I hate GNOME with a passion and will not use any distro, based on it. I have always preferred KDE, for its functionality and configurability.

Every once in a while I get itchy feet and try something else, but I always end up coming back to Manjaro. Not saying this is for everyone, but it's perfect for me. I have setup other family members with Mint or Zorin, because they're simpler and suit non-technical people more.

Essentially, there is no single distro that fits everybody. Best option is to tryout a few and find the one that works for you.

This. Americans tend to spell things as they sound. Makes a lot of sense, in most cases.

Laugh all you want. There will be a year of the Linux desktop

Basmman63

Been using it for a long time

It's been the year of the Linux desktop around here, for at least 15 years. Have used (or tried) them all. Used Mandrake KDE, for a few years, then SuSE/openSuSE KDE for a few years. For the last 3 or 4 years, I've been on Manjaro KDE. It's quite simply, the best. Everything just works... printing, scanning, office (LibreOffice or onlyOffice), GIMP, Kodi, SMB to my NAS boxes. I have Win10 in a Virtualbox VM, but can't remember the last time I fired it up.

Thunderbird for mail, Vivaldi or Firefox for web. There's nothing I really need Windoze for.
