If you want to end up in a maze of Kafkaesque complexity then getting arrested in Japan will be your ticket. They seem to have a legal trick that can keep you in jail indefinitely unless you confess your sins.

Different countries have different customs and legal systems. Most of the time for trivial stuff countries like China will seek to get rid of the misbehaving tourist as quickly and discreetly as possible.

As for being held for fourteen days without trial in the UK I'm pretty sure that Julian Assange has set a new record -- four years and counting. Obviously there's a bit of legal verbiage around this but boiled down he's been held in solitary for over four years on some charge or another.
