I do agree with your point, but I imagine there are constraints on time, space, maybe power sockets (ahem)... Using VMs allows multiple concurrent trials without needing a bigger, hotter office! And probably the hope of reviewing the OS proper, without needing to review the installation process in depth.

What's all that about then? Package manager deletes own config, WAI or bug feature? (I briefly checked the linked guide, couldn't see anything specific.)
