The whole point of x86 is backward compatibility.

Intel got its botty smacked with this stick when it tried to move the industry on to Itanic.

If software requires something which can't execute i386 opcodes, then what's the point? Just compile for Arm or Risc-V.

Windows, of course, is something else.
