I see "has decided to pursue other opportunities", as, they have left before they were sacked for something usually so bad that the company will never speak about it publicly.

Equally, it might be saying "this place is a madhouse and these plans are impossible, I quit" to get out before you get blamed for a predictable trainwreck, without saying anything that might ruin your prospects to get another job with a similar pay packet. (As other employers might be wary of employing you if you decide to say something nasty on the way out)

If he was being sacked though, he probably wouldn't be staying in post for 6 months to ensure a smooth transition.
