You aren't entirely wrong, sometimes AI is pretty much as you describe - but then, so are humans, sometimes, which is why we get wrong-way drivers, people who stop on motorways to let ducklings cross, people who mow down cyclists by driving on the wrong side of the road, etc, and most of the time it isn't even newsworthy. Most of the rest of the time, AI is better than your typical driver because it can, e.g., make a right turn correctly.

Really we're just arguing about how bad the current standard of driving is, and, as I said, the statistics suggest Autopilot is roughly at that level when measured by deaths per mile.

If we allow self driving cars to be used quite widely we have every expectation that they will improve over time. Whereas clearly that isn't happening with human drivers.
