Okay, but a language model is nothing but lots and lots of statistics. That's literally all it is. It has a black-box nature in what exactly the weights encode, but we do know for sure that it is a big statistical model.
If we accept the notion that it may be sentient, then we are accepting the notion that sentience may be nothing more than a scaled-up statistics engine. Which is really rather bleak.
