The twin /root for upgrade or fallback is very recent AIX like, for values less than a decade. HPUX 10 had something like it earlier I think. Vague recollection of messing with it in late 19990s. I have the impression that LP is trying to copy AIX concepts and doing it badly. AIX system resource controller is elegant and just works. You can also choose to use init scripts also like real nerds
