Fans of original gangster editors, look away now: It's Tilde, a text editor that doesn't work like it's 1976

What I don't understand is why there's no available keyboard that allows you to define control keys for cursor movement *across the board*. For example, ^H = one character left, ^J = one line down, ^N = one screen down, etc. Or the olde Wordstar key mapping. So you don't have to take your fingers off the alphabetic keyboard. And to repeat myself, it should work the same way in editors, word processors, file managers (to the extent that makes sense), spreadsheets, browsers (when entering text, including the URL bar), and so forth. It would not be difficult. But what do we have instead? Every app has its own mapping of control keys, and almost none bother to map the cursor keys to control keys. Bizarre.
