As I am sure you know, the danger there is in using MySQL on a new project even when Postgres *is* the better solution -- which you could only find out by learning a little Postgres.
When I were a lad, I enjoyed taking things apart to see how they worked. (And my mom did *not* enjoy shrieking at me "Put that back together NOW!") I didn't do it to gain useful knowledge, _however_ despite that the knowledge very often did prove useful. And now I do _useless_ tinkering with software that very often does prove useful later.
