The "we're open source so our time is more valuable than anyone else" attitude simply comes from the fact that a lot of this time is people doing the work on a volunteer basis, without any payment.

Just to give a more real-world metaphor, can you imagine what would happen if you went into a soup kitchen and said "I've peed in one of the stews you're about to feed to people - but don't worry, nobody will ever eat it because I've just told you about it, it's just a scientific experiment to test for a vulnerability in your processes"?
