Tlaloc, the beloved rain-god of the Aztecs brought life to the Earth, and labelling some of his sacrificial rites as “violent” seems a tad on the extreme side. I am sure that if some on social media at the time had been critical of the rituals, they would have been invited to partake in the next round and experience it for themselves.
On a different line of thought, I suppose, in these climate changing times, it might not be a bad idea to curry some favour with gods of rain.
