In the late '70s there was a massive panic at SLAC for a similar thing, but it happened BEFORE the event came to pass. Seems a newly installed bean-counter-in-charge decided he could be a hero and massively save on the year's costs by powering down the entire campus over the solstice/xmas/newyear break. Including all the computers, and everything connected to the beam. Rumo(u)r had it that Jimmy Carter himself called and bitched him out over the bone-headed idea.
