The difference is that Private Eye deals in hard news and their lawyers ensure that anything potentially libellous is a solid story. They're real journalists. I don't remember why they lost vs Maxwell, but it turned out they were right in the long run.

Gawker OTOH, was sloppy tabloid journalism. They picked fights with everyone just for the lolz (and the clicks) and when it inevitably went wrong, they cried wolf. Peter Thiel seems like a pretty awful human, but they outed him with no good reason, and shouldn't have been surprised when he got his revenge.

Looking back, Gawker's campaign of outing gay tech figures like Thiel and Cook has a nasty air of homophobia.

Now these sloppy hacks are trying to reinvent themselves as "edgy" tech journalists. That story's already been told: it was called Nathan Barley.
