Compression and decompression with lz4 or Zstd is so blazingly fast that it's almost always faster to compress data before sending it to a storage device because it's less data that needs to transferred. Even using fast NVME drives.
That last sentence is good to know (and bloody impressive). It makes me wonder whether we'll end up with compressed main memory, decompressed as it's loaded into the cache levels.
