You know very well Sun had speciffically and purposedly chosen a license incompatible with GPL because they wanted to have a small string attached. I don't buy the post-factum argument that they would have used GPL v3. Besides that, ZFS is available on Linux but not distributed from the same source.
By the way, GPL v3 came out because there were already people trying to poke holes in v2 and FSF had to close some of the loopholes. If GPL v2 was already too restrictive for the taste of Sun, I don't see them finding v3 more palatable.
