We employ some freshly-graduated engineers and although their discipline is not computer science, they are engineers. I was astounded that they had received no formal teaching in computer programming at university. None. Zero. They could skilfully use the commercial programmes they had sampled at uni, but anything else was a mystery.
Different in my day and that is a longer than I care to state.
