I've never really thought about "why 132 columns" before, but as its not multiples of 40 or 80, then I'm guessing that its related to the size of paper available (probably in the US?) and how many fixed width character blobs would fit in the space.

Although when you think a little more about this and the need for customisation of the ordinary roles of dead tree to add sprocket holes, tear lines for a page and alternative green and white stripy bars, then it makes it you wonder why they didn't go for 120 or 160 column as the page shape could presumably also be changed during the preparation of the fanfold paper pack.

Or is it actually 120 columns with 12 extra columns for some line number prefix type arrangement ??

Interested in this topic suddenly invoked after several decades not worrying about it.
