Most US-based companies use embedded Windows for these applications, I'm not sure why... Perhaps major US corporations would rather have the backing of another major US corporation over the community of Linux developers. I mean, the US military even runs their warships on Windows.
On another note, McDonald's might just be rolling these things out in the UK but they've had them over here for over 4 years and have largely worked out the issues. It's surprising that they'd have so many issues over in the UK, maybe they hired the wrong IT contractors.
