So yep, it's Java Applets again. Or Silverlight. Or Flash. There is a runtime, what do you think the browser is doing?

We've definitely been here before many times.

At least it's better than ActiveX, and the published spec with two implementations (Chromium/Mozilla) does make it slightly more secure as most sandbox breakouts will only work on one or the other, and not both.

I suppose it's not a totally terrible idea, as it's not really any worse than minified Javascript.

Just so long as I can block it by default and enable when I want to.

An explicit click-to-run would be ok.
