Depends on what scanner you bought, and what you scan.
In Windows you can scan images too via WIA, but that's fairly limited, and it's OK for simple documents scan only.
If you need to scan something more complex, and your scanner support specific features, you may want to use them. Scanner used by imaging professional may need calibration/profiling as well.
