It is not clear he could have detected the error based on what information was available to him. A pilot has to rely on the ground crew, he cannot personally inspect every detail. The wikipedia entry says he had the fuel level checked also with a "floatstick", but still got the wrong answer. Maybe there was also confusion with what units that device used?
