Did it work? Sure, as a lot of old. ugly, cumbersome and brittle software (with a lot of care) but it didn't mean it didn't need an update just because "traditionally we always did it that way" - and there result was that I've see not a few Linux developers unable to run a daemon properly.
That's a good argument for replacing or updating init.
