There is a type of slingshot that can fire largish steel ball bearings with good accuracy once you put in a bit of practice. They are lethal to squirrels, will damage a coyote and discourage all but the hungriest puma. they have the advantage of being silent, easily concealed, and AFAIK legal pretty much anywhere.
