But IIRC, there's an option, when setting up a UNIX system, to encrypt passwords. It's supposed to be enabled by default, but maybe...
CSB: when DG decided that maintaining their home-grown schematic capture system was silly, the engineers all got Sun workstations. Shortly thereafter, they discovered "xnetrek". 50 engineers roaming the known universe, shooting at everything that moved, is a surprisingly effective way to bring a thick-wire 10mbit Ethernet to its knees.
