Lost in the mists of time

The best I've found in the past on this is at https://www.gwern.net/Tanks which includes a link to https://www.gwern.net/docs/ai/1964-kanal.pdf.

The paper describes a study using pictures of tanks and explains the very promising results ("The experimental performance of the statistical classification procedure exceeded all expectations") though it does also acknowledge some limitations ("we feel that the sizes of the design sample and especially the independent non-tank test sample are considerably smaller than we would like them to be").

There is then separately and later a claim that Edward Fredkin during the early 60's challenged the outcome in a conference, observing in discussion that the model could simply have been distinguishing between sunny and cloudy days based on the photos shown.

But I like the story anyway and use it regularly!
