Oh I agree. A highly complex SQL query is far harder to grok than any declarative piece of code simply because what it actually does is highly implicit and the correlations between various parts of the query or subqueries can become almost impossible to hold in your head after a certain point. Hence my comment about programmers ultimately being required.
