A few decades isn't such a long time after all.
I always was suspicious of taking shortcuts for performance reasons. MS had a good thing going with Windows NT, but then had to cram things into the kernel for short term performance gains, for just one irritating example. Auto-run this and that. Thousands of ways to hide auto-start of crap. MS is a friggin master of making things obscure and insecure.
These things always have a way of catching up with us.
