I thoroughly endorse this policing vs partnering analysis of the EA role and its increasingly poor fit in most organisations and am going to shamelessly steal it.
My problem with EAs has been that, with very few exceptions, they've always fallen into the policeman archetype with the droopy voice and the 9-5 schedule of "review" meetings where they present the latest round of the Architecture Deck v2.088-3 (2).pptx which has little to no bearing on what currently exists or what will actually be delivered. It just adds no value to the services being delivered.
