A new Remote Job Entry terminal was connected to a mainframe - reading punched cards and then printing output. This was the cutting edge of technology (1972) at 2400bps half-duplex.

When installed at a satellite office about a mile away it was in competition with their existing system - a man on a "grocer" basket pedal bicycle. The man on the bike won all the time if there was a substantial amount of cards and printout in a run.

Even 20 years ago a proposed off-site backup system required so much bandwidth that we advised them to use an overnight courier instead.
