It is a take on the model that all of the cloud storage providers use. That is what Moshe was drawing on when he built XIV back in the day... the Google data storage model, but in an on prem box. You can just buy storage from Google Cloud now and get the concept in a managed model, like Google Cloud Nearline. AWS has a similar methodology with S3 and the like.
