You are correct.
IBM forked the last release of OpenOffice that was put out under SISSL (which allowed them to keep their code changes in house) and put a (surprisingly useful - truth be told) tabbed interface on it and called it Lotus Symphony.
They then weaned all of their employees off MS Office and onto it - giving it an immediate userbase of almost half a million.
However they then gave up and stopped updating it, and recommended OpenOffice as the upgrade path, where they donated the source code.
