Haven't touched it since 1985.

Have you programmed any PIC's etc etc?

I can't see its relevance to run-anywhere processor/platform independence

IOT wont be made of run-anywhere processor independent code.

It might have a generic C library on top, but to talk to the (custom) hardware like as not you will need assembler, and to write the lowest level c library functions.
