The most annoying "flaws/features" in imaging libraries stem from the perceived need (by users) to stay friendly with idiotic image formats, mostly proprietary ones, as pushed by, for example, Microsoft (who were the first to force command-containing image formats to the hapless masses). Hardly a *NIX problem then (unless by *NIX problem" you really mean "the will to play nice with idiotic image formats pushed by non-*NIX companies")
