Custom vs commodity hardware

I saw the recent post on E8 Storage (E8 Storage ... IOPS flash dazzler), this looks like a rather monolithic custom-hardware version with similar spec. It's PCIe rather than Ethernet connected, 5U rather than 2U and fixed size rather than scalable by adding new (commodity) SSDs.
