Yes, I've often wondered about the Tardis' level of sentience. We have had hints that the Tardis sometimes takes the Doctor to where/when he "needs" to be rather than where he was planning on going, then we got The Doctors Wife episode thoroughly demonstrating the Tardis' sentience, so why not have the Tardis, at least in extreme circumstances, come and rescue him?
After all, we've already had episodes where the Tardis has materialised around the Doctor + Companion because it was "attracted" or "called" (or something)
