I am not a fan of LinkedIn, but reluctantly am on it because prospective employers want the comfort of the crowd. I have myself gained nothing from it, but if they want to go see that I have links with many nice and interesting (and obliging) people, then go ahead. Don't risk a thing on just talking to me and checking my references.
