I can easily manage two years, just coming up, without a case and without being careful. I ride and hike and am a guy so I am careless by design.

Since I don't require a super thin phone with glass to the edge I guess I can save on cases.

Saves access time too and I can see information such as time, notifications and appointments etc. when the screen is 'off' - very useful for discrete use.
