Well, perhaps not so far "back then". It sh or csh or, if lucky, tcsh and vi (I mean vi, not vim). But we could use make, awk etc. fluently too. awk is still a wonderful tool for everyday, off-the-cuff use. What's more, we did not have to "make them work". They worked and still do. Our efforts went into the job in hand, not making the tools work.
re the test: do not use env(1). Run it without env to see what your default shell does or run it with an explicit path or change shells.
