Overhyped perhaps, but still useful
I built a home 3D printer from a kit 8 months ago. I agree that 3D printing is often over-hyped and too slow for mass production, and most of the things I have printed have been ornaments or parts related to 3D printers. However, I have also printed some genuinely useful parts, including parts to assist my disabled mother with daily living, and parts to assist with my own electronic circuit manufacture and test. To me, the 3D printer is an alternative to carving such parts from wood or cutting them out from plastic sheet - with the advantage that if I don't get the design perfectly right first time, I can just modify it and print again..
