    Wow, the civilised world gets smaller by the day.

    It never ceases to amaze me how many of these pathetic small-minded nations exist in the world. China, Australia, heck even the UK we know about but more and more prudish, pathetic, uncivilised and backward countries are brought to the attention of the world every day.

    Is there a list somewhere of countries where you can't be thrown into jail for doing something every human being should have a right to be able to do?

      "more and more prudish, pathetic, uncivilised and backward countries are brought to the attention of the world every day."

      Had you not heard of Indonesia before?

      I do hope you see the irony in your post.

        RE: Quick Question

        Of course I had heard of Indonesia and I knew that they (culturally at least) don't seem to like homosexuality much -- but since I don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the worlds countries, know that official religions include Catholicism, and that it is not an Islamic country as such, I had taken the place for a more enlightened country than it actually is.

        Perhaps my post could have been better phrased -- the point being I wouldn't expect most people to take a great deal of interest in Indonesia* and now they've been publicly outed as one of the countries who decided civilisation is not for them.

        *due to the size of the world and not anything in particular about Indonesia.

          Seriously? porn == civilisation?

          Who cares about democracy, it's porn that's the distinguishing factor!

          Here's an idea - put some effort into a relationship to the point that someone wants to keep having sex with you, then you can ditch the pretend stuff people sell.

            @Anonymous Coward

            Actually, yes, I think the attitude to porn is a pretty good pointer to the attitude towards personal freedom and, following that, civilisation.

            To make it illegal for people to film a private consensual act and make that available to people who want to view it is just as uncivilised and anti-freedom whether they are insulting a general (or whatever it is Turkey gets in a flap about) or burning a religious book or having sex.

            Without mitigating factors such as overbearing religion I think you would find that most societies find there is a place for the likes of porn and, should it come to the vote as to whether it be allowed, it would be allowed in any truly democratic country.

            Suggesting that only the hairy-palmed self-abusers who need to get out more, or those who are unhappy in their marriages will view porn is just closed-minded twaddle.

      On the other hand

      It's one of the few countries not to go after the women and letting the men off (no pun). It's there together with Sweden I guess, so I salute them on this.

      [For example, Blighty still finds it easier to harass street prostitutes than booking kerb crawlers; less chance of embarassing outcomes like soiling the name of good housefathers of course.]

      Indonesia is a troubled place

      Jakarta is the only city in the world were I have been offered children for sex in the center of town, just walking past the fountain neat the Mariott. Poverty causes some sick sick individuals to do some sick sick things. I think the country should clean that up before they get all hot and bothered about consenting adults having a bit of fun.

    nice to hear that the judge officially stated that Playboy is "no pornograpy". Time to inform the IT-department to change the net filters...

    Ah, Indonesia.

    Such a lovely country.

    A little genocide (with the West's complicity, I hasten to add), a little Prison For Porn, a bit of crackdown on sodomy, a little antiterror slash-and-burn...

    Relieved? I was rather disappointed to be honest.

    Fuck me

    The same bullshit those officials are touting as reasons for tightening control of web access in Indonesia is essentially the same crap Steve Conroy is trying to pedal to the Australian public as fertilizer.

    Australian democracy; What a joke! Our Freedom of Information policies can now be compared with Islamic Fundamentalists, Hardline communists and Dictatorships. Thanks Steve Conroy for making us the laughing stock of the free world
