This is one of the most disturbing things I've read today...it's not the implementation, as hopefully it'll only lead to the Met switchboard being jammed with calls from people who would otherwise be writing complaining to other publications..."Disgruntled of Doncaster" etc.
The IDEA is genuinely alarming. The whole 'report someone you don't like the look of/have a grudge against and we will take serious action on your behalf'. And this is from the police, who some people still take seriously. And some people possibly believe that we need protecting from the invisible enemy from Eurasia, or whoever it is this week.
It's never turned out well in the past. Why do the fucking dipsticks feel the need to prove it's a bad idea yet again? Down with this sort of thing, indeed.

They would have everybody under surveillance, and when they get caught putting everybody under surveillance the Police will say it's not in the Public interest to prosecute so then they would have the law changed so they could put everybody under surveillance and then lock anybody up the complains about the surveillance because you would be a Pirate/Terrorist.
Then they would block every website which didn't support its ideals and lock anybody up that complains because you would be a Pirate/Terrorist.
Then they plant evidence and lock anybody up that stumbled across this evidence and then ban their families from using the intertubes in case they too stumbled across said planted evidence.
Muslims don't feel too bad. They do it to us as well!

...anybody in an internet café with a beard and "towel" on their head is going to be looked at in a lot more detail (and to hell with privacy... privacy? wassat?) when they are using a public computer. Thing is, most of the towel-heads I knew in the UK were Sikh and were sick of being confused for Muslims, and most of the Muslims I knew were peaceful and were sick of being confused for extremist weirdos. Maybe it is time to accept that deranged trigger-happy nutters come in all shapes, sizes, and beliefs instead of the mass media referring to "Islamic extremists"... just leave off the first word so all the other people of that religion can get on with their life without being a vaguely disguised target of MET-inspired hate campaigns, because really it's no different to saying "let's watch all Catholic men because we know they *like* children". No, a tiny number do. The majority don't. So, MET, kindly STFU and do some actual proper policework instead of antagonising people for the sake of it.
As for the bit about co-operating café owners... forget it, I invoke Godwin's on myself.
Ok so we now have, continued erosion of civil liberties, civilian informants, reporting on crimes including effectively subversion, increasing surveillence of the public, censorship of what people say and do thereby effectively punishing Throught Crimes, spying on all our communications and building ever more databases on us all. Wonderful. :(
