back to article Met issues internet cafe terror warnings

The Met's plan to counter terrorism by putting up posters in internet cafes has been put into action, with broad warnings against "inappropriate" web and email use. Two notices labelled "internet code of conduct" and "internet policy" have been spotted by patrons in London cafes. "Do not access, upload, download or view any …

Big Brother Doesn't Need To Watch You

Why waste time and money spying on people when you can foment distrust and get them to do it to themselves?

    Spies

We don't have the resources to watch you, so why not get your neighbours to do it?

Why are the people tasked with protecting our society so intent on destroying it? Fscking Stalinists.

      I think

I think that Mcarthy is a far better example to be honest. As I suspect is Hitler, both used fear of something else to increase their power and persecute groups of people.

Stalinists tended to slaughter people out of fear that they would rise up and betray them or to "right" perceived past "wrongs."

      SPIES

This to me a reasonable thing for the Brits to do as they have the biggest SPI camera network in the world.

When the police used cameras to find a family that is sending it's kids to the wrong school you have more to worry about than "porn".

    Sounds like

some sad little twunt in the Met is trying to start a round of Macarthyism up...but with anyone vaguely dusky as the target. Or anyone who you don't like the look of.

This is one of the most disturbing things I've read today...it's not the implementation, as hopefully it'll only lead to the Met switchboard being jammed with calls from people who would otherwise be writing complaining to other publications..."Disgruntled of Doncaster" etc.

The IDEA is genuinely alarming. The whole 'report someone you don't like the look of/have a grudge against and we will take serious action on your behalf'. And this is from the police, who some people still take seriously. And some people possibly believe that we need protecting from the invisible enemy from Eurasia, or whoever it is this week.

It's never turned out well in the past. Why do the fucking dipsticks feel the need to prove it's a bad idea yet again? Down with this sort of thing, indeed.

If the RIAA/BPI was on the case.......

They would have everybody under surveillance, and when they get caught putting everybody under surveillance the Police will say it's not in the Public interest to prosecute so then they would have the law changed so they could put everybody under surveillance and then lock anybody up the complains about the surveillance because you would be a Pirate/Terrorist.

Then they would block every website which didn't support its ideals and lock anybody up that complains because you would be a Pirate/Terrorist.

Then they plant evidence and lock anybody up that stumbled across this evidence and then ban their families from using the intertubes in case they too stumbled across said planted evidence.

Muslims don't feel too bad. They do it to us as well!

I remember a land where I used to be innocent until proven guilty. Shame it's gone.

    WTF?

    When will these worthless fuckwitts

That call themselves the "Police" just fuck off to Austria and leave the UK to being a liberal democracy.

Perhaps we should just build a bloody great big wall around all the police stations and contain the problem.

    ICANN allowing unicode domains

It's got easier today though. ICANN just allowed unicode domains, so you can tell if something is a suspicious terrorist (ie foreign) website - it's written in swiggly writing.

How about we try to find a website that's sexual, violent AND extremist?

Do the Met really think Osama Bin Laden and his chums sit round in internet cafes planning jihad?

  16. Just Thinking

    I would like to think

that the police are being really clever here, and this is a rouse to catch shoulder-surfing identity theives. Anyone who rings in to report what was on someone else's screen must be up to no good, otherwise they wouldn't even be looking.

    But I doubt it.

    Stop

    So basically...

...anybody in an internet café with a beard and "towel" on their head is going to be looked at in a lot more detail (and to hell with privacy... privacy? wassat?) when they are using a public computer. Thing is, most of the towel-heads I knew in the UK were Sikh and were sick of being confused for Muslims, and most of the Muslims I knew were peaceful and were sick of being confused for extremist weirdos. Maybe it is time to accept that deranged trigger-happy nutters come in all shapes, sizes, and beliefs instead of the mass media referring to "Islamic extremists"... just leave off the first word so all the other people of that religion can get on with their life without being a vaguely disguised target of MET-inspired hate campaigns, because really it's no different to saying "let's watch all Catholic men because we know they *like* children". No, a tiny number do. The majority don't. So, MET, kindly STFU and do some actual proper policework instead of antagonising people for the sake of it.

As for the bit about co-operating café owners... forget it, I invoke Godwin's on myself.

    Oh great, now civilian informants...

Ok so we now have, continued erosion of civil liberties, civilian informants, reporting on crimes including effectively subversion, increasing surveillence of the public, censorship of what people say and do thereby effectively punishing Throught Crimes, spying on all our communications and building ever more databases on us all. Wonderful. :(

    Definition of Secret police:

"Secret-police organizations employ internal spies and civilian informants to find protest leaders or dissidents, and they may also employ agents provocateurs to incite political opponents to perform illegal acts against the government, whereupon such opponents may be arrested. Secret police may open mail, tap telephone lines, use various techniques to trick, blackmail, or coerce relatives or friends of a suspect into providing information."

So another day and another warning sign where our country is going and yet some people still fail to see what is happening to our country. :(
