back to article Google snubs St George - again

Google has once again snubbed England's dragon-slaying patron saint, despite our threat back in 2005 to take our porn search queries elsewhere. Indeed, while El Reg today proudly celebrates this most English of days, Google remains resolutely St George-free. We were going to email the search monolith to request the usual half- …

    SUN Branding

I applaud your pointing out the flaw with Google, but from my PC here all I can see on the Reg page is the SUN logo on a nice purple banner. Admittedly, I did see a quick flash of St Georges flag, but those buggers at SUN plonked themselves right on top of it :)

Cry 'God for Harry! England and Saint George!' Indeed!

Oh dear, what a pity, never mind....

So St George's Day got missed again. So it was last there in 2002. At least St George's Day has had some recognition. On the 2002 Google logo, it was marked "St George's Day - UK", yet it's England that bothers about it. Us poor Scots have had no St Andrew's Day logos, nor even recognition by Google at all.

    Get over yourselves.

    How about a NoGoogle Day?

If Google are willing to ignore the English for a day, then the English should be willing to ignore Google for a day.

From now on, every St. George's Day shall also be No Google Day.

Remember kids, there are other search engines out there...

    Google.co.ireland only?

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure that on St Patricks Day, Google was rife with Shamrocks and other such Irish paraphanalia. Yet on St Georges day there's not a red cross, dragon or knight in shining armour in sight.

The English always manage to celebrate the day to be Irish (more because it's a great reason to get bladdered than because they might be one 2000th Irish) but St George gets overlooked?

Is Google run by Paddy Power or vegans dispising the idea of a living creature being slaughtered?

    Except you're not...

Because the fancy St George banner you've created is swiftly overwritten by a SUN sponsored one that's all in blue.

    Discriminating against the English?

Surely Google much be considered as discriminating against the English as they are happy to stick up other countries national day emblems.

As the story back in 2004 highlighted, Google missed it then and apologised but then they go and do it again this year. Think there's to it they admit.

Think it's about time Google finally gives a truthful answer to why they won't support it!

Google - The English people await your answer!!

    Oops

I mis-read that last sentence. I thought it said lap-dancing Heather Mills not tap-dancing!

    what happened in 2002???

    apparently there was a in/on:

    St. George's Day, UK - April 23, 2002

http://www.google.com/holidaylogos02.html <--- they even have the graphic!!

    Pot complains about kettle darkening?

I don't see how you can complain about Google not putting a lance or dragon on their website when you have nary a St. George's Cross decorating your website today....

    Advert > St. George

El Reg may be proudly celebrating the day, but the effect is somewhat spoiled (at least from where I'm looking) by the Cross of St. George being stomped on by Sun Purple after ~0.5 seconds.

Any chance of overriding the advert for this special day?

  11. Rob Saunders

    Hmmmmm

If the register is celebrating St Georges (as I have seen the banner appropriately decorated when it's not turned Sun purple) then why is the regular red banner atop this story?

  12. Philip Bune

    Google as Usual

If it is not something that is celebrated by the USA then it is usually ignored by the beomoth that is Google.

Did a quick look & St Patrick is celebrated every year what a surprise.

    St George's day

So this is another good example of our Anglo-American relationship. I note that Google don't have an email address to pass comments to them. Snailmail anyone?

    Errm...

Unlike St. Patrick & St. David - St. George is largely a mythological character and to confuse matters he is also the patron of Canada, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, Portugal and Serbia. He was most likely an Arab (Palestinian or possibly Turkish) he never came to Britain and is not the original patron saint of England (he replaced St. Edmund around 1350). St Andrew was probably Greek.

I guess it is difficult to justify getting enthusiastic about someone so vague and who has little connection with any of "his" patronised countries.

At least The Irish and the Welsh have saints who came for these Islands (even if St Patrick was a Brython not a Gael)...

We will search for them on the beaches

I've just strung the longbow, watch out Google. i suspect them to be secretly run by the Trafalgar revenge society and can't help but notice the whiff of garlic every time i used them...

I've deleted them from my bookmarks in revenge...

    Do no evil?

Dragon loving freaks they are. I say we shave our heads and go up there to Google Mountain with flaming torches and show them what being English is all about... with a good football hooligan style kicking.

    .

'tis because you didn't take your porn searches elsewhere - empty threats worry no one..

Anyway I see no celebration of St. George here. The red cross title comes up only to be overwritten immediately by your blue "ad" title. Empty threats and false claims eh ?

  20. Chris Matchett

    What St George?

All I can see up top on these pages is either the standard red or a flash of white and red covered up hastily by a Sun advert. Patron Saint days are not for big monolithic companies - they should be for the facist or drunk instead.

Who cares about St George anyway?

The English have pretty much got it sewn up in the UK anyway. They've been in control for the last few hundred years and they never let anyone forget about it. As for the casual, blatant racism that the English show towards their Scottish and Welsh neighbours- well, how about you just cut that out, eh? Then you can get a little bit more respect, and not until.

  22. Charles Crawley

    Very poor show...

Still not sorted lads... With only 7.5 hours left...

  23. Gavin Morgan

What of the rest of the Country...

There you go again, poor English people blah blah blah.

We Welsh folk don't get recognition for St David's Day, neither do the Scots get a St Andrews Day theme.

What makes the English so much better than the rest of us - pure bloody arrogance again!

  24. Steve

    Muppets

I see no SUN banner, perhaps because I have my web browser configured properly, pshaw !

  25. Mark

    Just shows .....

... that the world still hates the English!

  26. Alex Kinch

    Well Gavin Morgan..

.. apparently you Welsh folk get announcements in English *and* Welsh at Paddington station on St. David's Day. Not that anyone would notice the difference as you usually can't hear what they're announcing anyway.

But yes. Jolly bad show chaps re: . St. 'Sun is having a big sale cos they're 25 years old' -'s Day hasn't got the same ring to it..

    Learn from the Irish!!

If you Brits would just follow the lead of the Irish and add beer-drinking and public exposition to St. George's Day, then none of this would be a problem!

You should immediately start down this road by attaching wings, horns and a tail to a keg of beer and then ritualistically "slaying the dragon" in the local village square.

Just a little advice from your Yank cousins....

    Re: Learn from the Irish

Sounds like the average Saturday in our village..

  29. Jasmine Strong

    Actually...

...last St David's day *was* commemorated by a Google doodle; however it was only shown on google.co.uk and not google.com, which I always think is rather a shame.

  30. Danny Thompson

We will all have arrived at Hell .......

....... in our handcart when we all start celebrating St Google day. Remember, you read it here first!

  31. David Cantrell

    Who cares

Who gives a fuck? "Saints days" are only important in the churches which most of us ignore anyway.

  32. Alex Kinch

    Re: Learn from the Irish

So the only reason St. Patrick's Day is popular worldwide is because it's an excuse for a piss-up?

Damn.. and there was me thinking it was something deeper than that. Oh well.. pass the beers, I may be 24 hours late but I have some serious catching up to do in the name of St. George.

    Racial discrimination

THIS IS WHAT I SENT DIRECTLY TO GOOGLE:-

Iam rather surprised at the lack of interest in St. Georges day, today, by your company. I note that you are pleased to acknowledge Ireland, Scotland and Wales but seem to ignore England and I consider this most unpatriotic.

I am NOT a rabid English Nationalist but I do love my country and gave 22 years of my life to it and to you in the Royal Air Force, prepared to die if necessary. Now, when my comrades and I have made the succession safe you, and your ilk, are unprepared to acknowledge our willingly given service, I doubt that you even wish to know about England. Be proud and wave St. Georges flag, even if he was a Turk he is OUR petron saint.
