Living up to their name
Carphone Whorehouse
An 18-year-old Coventry lass has been left "angry", "horrified", "shocked" and "deeply traumatised" after Carphone Warehouse returned her repaired mobile loaded with hardcore porn. Lauren Kennedy, 18, packed off her Nokia for remedial treatment earlier this month when "it kept cutting out during phone calls", the Sun explains …

but I would be shocked if someone put stuff like this on my phone. Not because I would be shocked by the pics themselves (necessarily), but by the fact that someone put unwanted stuff on my phone AT ALL. By the same token, they might have enlisted you for all sorts of nasty (costly) subscriptions to unwanted services, or all sorts of spyware.
I am afraid I must resort to the use of the FAIL icon for the first time
Ok, so probably most of the people who read this use t'Internet for what it's meant for (Google Avenue Q ;-) but there is a sizeable majority of people who have yet to discover the wonders of recordings of other people having sex!
Dont' laugh at them because they lives aren't ruled by their libidoes...
Granted they do, but when they choose to! You're quite the enlightened new man are you? You're either a sad basement dweller or a complete troll/tool!
Not much shocks me, but if a device came back like this I would feel quite sick knowing some nasty pond-dwelling scumbag had been loading bongo-flicks on my phone then using my phone with the same grubby mits they had most likely been playing with themselves with!! *SHUDDER*
Call me cynical, but I don't believe that a teenager growing up in today's world can be affected to the prementioned degree by what was viewed on the phone. Can we believe that the poor 'girl' in question was left so traumatised by the event she immediately contacted the nation's foremost blab-rag to alert the world of her plight (for a modest fee, no doubt)?
Obviously the story needs to be aired as, quite rightly, the content could wind up with minors and repair companies need to be cautious, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's enjoying her 15 minutes payola down the student bar with her pals having a right good laugh about it.
"I felt sick when I saw the videos"
We can assume from that and other comments that she watched all the videos. Surely if she was that upset by the videos she'd have stopped after a few seconds of the first? The fact that she had the stomach to watch all of them suggests that she wasn't that upset by them. If she decides to sue I'll bet that's the line the defence will be taking.

It wasn't me, I didn't do it. it MUST have been CPW... prove it wasn't. I'm a nice girl, I wouldn't do anything impure or inappropriate like that. Seriously, that disgusting stuff is all immoral and wrong and I want no part of it. I must forsake all bodily pleasure, I want to be a nun, you MUST believe me.
Methinks she doth protest too much.
Let me guess. We're all blokes here who have seen our fair share of porn, probably on the internet.
This may come as a shock, but not everyone has.
I could scroll down /b/ all day and not bat an eyelid. I think a normal person might very well feel sick until they become desensitised like the rest of us.
What has gender got to do with it?
"There were clips of couples having sex in the toilet, in the bathroom and having group sex in the bedroom. You can only see the women and not the person who's recording it, but you can hear him egging them on in a sleazy voice."
How shocked was she? She managed to watch them all. The reason people are mocking her is because she went and watched all the videos. Much like the PC World employee that forced himself to sit and watch Gary Glitter's entire child porn collection, feeling disgusted the entire time, and THEN call the police.
...that's what happened to said PC World employee. I know because his loss of employment was used as an example to those of us working on customer's computers as a lesson in why not to poke through people's HDDs.
Whether it actually stops anyone is anyone's guess. I don't work there any more, thank fuck.
I know a guy in my town who fixes people's computers on the side. Not a registered business, friends and friends of friends etc. just brought their computers round, 50-100 bucks later all sorted, come get your computer back. Except that one day he found kiddy porn on someone's computer. He did the right thing and called the police. Who promptly turned up and arrested HIM for possession of kiddy porn, because he had no paperwork proving the computer wasn't his and they refused to believe that the person who made the phone call was the same guy at the house. The computer belonged to a relative of one of his "friends", so he didn't know the person's details - and the "friend" refused to testify because she didn't want to admit her relative was a fucking paedophile!
Even though in the end he wasn't convicted, he lost his job, the legal fees bankrupted him, it took him 2 years to get his name off the SOR, his wife left him, got all his property and the children, and he was denied access to his children because the family court thought he MIGHT be a kiddy fiddler. He didn't just lose his job, he lost *everything* and it ruined his life. All because he wanted to do the right thing by reporting this scumbag.
So the message is clear: If you get a computer to fix that has kiddy porn on it, just erase it off the hard drive, let these perverts get away with it and don't say anything to anyone, otherwise you'll be witch-hunted.

If you were 8 or 9 you probably couldn't care less as you'd rapidly get back to jumping out of trees and making machine gun noises. Although a year or so older and it'd be the catch of the century, I remember when we found porn mags in a bin, we were as happy as pigs in mud. Then some other basterds raided our base and stole our porn mags, so begun the long war of the summer of 91.
I remember my old dear once got a phone call from a heavy breather, after doing his thing he goes "Can you guess what I'm doing?" and my mother replied with "You're probably sat in your living room playing with your little willy" the deep breather hung up.
These things are only fun when people react.
< When it came back, it boasted "ten videos ranging from five to ten minutes" featuring "saucy romps, group sex and women touching themselves". Also on offer were "images of women in sexy undies">
So, today we hear of a device that was in possession of the "traumatised" girl, at least 1 cpw employee - more? - and the outcome is what? A grovelling apology, a few quid exchanged, nasty publicity and everythings's ok?
Yesterday El Reg reported the case of someone (a man) facing a custodial sentence over "6 seconds of extreme pr0n". I'm sure there were different circumstances, but a lot must hinge on perception of offensive material?
Wow, now there's a justice system finely balanced with the niceities of judging pornography!
y'all know that her protestations along with the lurid details is likely to come directly from the paper itself. Along with the £500 you get for this sort of thing.
The apparent contradiction comes from the paper needing mock outrage and an excuse to go into detail on the images.
If the girl can't see what the paper is up to by printing her face next to details of pron then she really is naive. The irony of sad old pervs getting worked up looking at her is no doubt right over her head.
I've always wondered what libricant they use on the slider of nokia phones. Now I know, now I know too much information.
Ironicly there are probably alot of people who would pay extra for that level of customer care service - free porn with every service. Indeed i'm now suspecting that the vibrate mode on Nokia phones has a dual-use.
Carphone Warehouse and Constantly Waxing have the same initials - same as Content Woundering.
I know that the Nokia smartphone is smart, mine developed full AI beyond human level and now downloads porn every few seconds.
My Nokia touch screen sometimes touches me.
Chap walks into a carphone warhouse and goes upto the sale assistant in a low whispering tone "psst, how much for a under the counter service *nidge nidge wink wink* of my Nokia".
I now understand why they have all those details on phone contracts at carphone warehouse - your phone your way realy does deliver.
I needed to get my Nokia serviced the other day at CW, so I got my girlfriend to take it in. (think about it :).
Hmm what to get, free PSP, free PS3, Free XBOX 360, free ..... ew i know, dam offer no longer available.
If this is how they treat customer when they service phones, I know were I'm buying my next laptop and getting a extended service contract.
If you compare the cost of service and the phone and the cost of a porn subscription then you can see how they are tapping into new markets.
Lastly in further news, Care
phone Warehouses Nokia repair returns for March increased 5000%. Nokia have said that they would get to the bottom of this.
While I fully agree with the jokes and comments of "Oh how shocked", to add a serious note to the story - imagine if it had been "violent porn" - the kind that gets people locked up for kink involving Tony the Tiger. You get a phone back, and you're in possession of illegal porn that carries a prison sentence. That could be a nasty discovery.
...if someone did a drive-by upload. If you scan for BT devices then a fair few of them will allow you to send items via Bluetooth and then automatically store them. It might be that this particular Nokia has a software bug that leaves out the step where you need to OK such transfers.
As to the shocked aspect, well I suppose that a lot of 18 year old girls are quite innocent, there's a lot of difference between a late teenager and someone in their 20s who has been round the block a few times and doesn't live with their parents any more.
Actually, I've just looked at The Sun article at the phone in question, looks like a fancy Nokia touch screen phone...
This girl says "I told them they were incredibly lucky I wasn't a really young kid. For all they know I could be eight or nine years old."
WTF?
I wouldn't give my 8 and 9 year old daughters mobile phones full stop, let alone bloody expensive Nokia touch screen phones, I don't even have a phone like that!
Mine's the one with the repaired e63 minus saucy videos in the pocket.
Rob
Was there a mention in the story that the people featured in the videos were remotely attractive?
Imagine if the video starlets were John McCririck and Anne Widdicombe, I would want a hell of a lot more than a tenner for being subjected to that. As for watching them all, cmon people....we all would because we all have our morbid side :|
"What if one of my two younger brothers had turned the phone on and found those images?"
If lads nowadays are anything like lads in my time (not THAT long ago, mind), we wouldn't have heard of this case...
Anyway, I just went to the Sun's link. It is funny how they wrote "filth" in bold and underlined in the middle of the page, and PORN in all caps and bold... Do they like it that much?
It's blatantly obvious what's happened, and if she'd engaged her clearly seldom used brain for just a few seconds, she'd have realised the resumption she jumped clearly makes no sense whatsoever. Why? Why would some guy in the workshop load this stuff ONTO a customers phone? I mean sure, having a rumage round for naughties and possibly copying them off, but what's to be gained from loading them on?
the main board was clearly reconditioned, but some numpty forgot to wipe the memory (like the unwashed swathe that get regularly shipped to china).
Consumers have this weird fantasy that when their electronic device is sent for repair, brand new components are manufactured and then fitted 'hot off the press', as it were.
If you have a computer with a burnt out PSU, but a perfectly good mobo, and another with a knackered mobo but functional PSU, what would you do? Why would you think any other repair shop would do different?
90% of the time, the production run on a particular electronic design is so short that brand new spare parts will all be gone within a year.
£10 sounds perfectly resonable. Yeah, he forgot to press the format button. Here's a tenner for the 30 seconds of time it will take for you to do it yourself.
So no, dear. Noone's had their 'filthy paws' all over your phone except the over worked, underpaid engineer who swapped out the mainboard that was previously owned by a red blooded guy with a healthy sex drive.
It's a shame there isn't another undiscovered continent like America, where we can ship these Prudes before they plunge us into another psychologically damaging Victorian period, where chair legs must be covered, and your young son is trussed up at night to prevent him masturbating (the bitrthplace of BDSM)
My girlfriends sony went to CPW for repair. After it was returned we discovered it was full of home-made smut of some mid thirty-something couple going at it (we're in our early twenties). The bloke seemed to be particuarly fond of taking pictures of himself in the mirror (or at least a certain part of his anatomy).
Turned out they had mixed up her micro-sd memory card with someone elses. We were smart enough to wipe all the stuff off before handing it over (nothing smutty mind :-D)
Didn't bother complaing, thought it was really funny at the time actually. Sound to me she is protesting a little too much in order to secure some compensation.
"Sound to me she is protesting a little too much in order to secure some compensation."
Yep, probably. Little like, a small shunt in traffic and OMG I HAS WHIPLASH I HAS COMPO NAO PLS.
Oh well. We'll all go together when we go, as Tom Lehrer once said.
